NWSWD provides a variety of services to schools in Northwest Vermont (at little to no cost) to help your institution understand what the law requires and how to reduce your solid waste. Our services include presentations and activities, field trips, consultations, waste audits, and bins and signage. They can also be tailored to meet your needs. NWSWD offers a range of classroom programs about waste reduction, composting, recycling, and upcycling that are educational and interactive. Our activities include Upcycled Makerspace and Classroom Zero Waste Competition. Programs are free to all schools within the Northwest Vermont Solid Waste District. We are here to provide schools a basic understanding of what’s recyclable and compostable, and what is not! Our outreach staff will consult about a range of topics in depth with your team, including waste reduction and diversion, composting, hazardous waste disposal, compliance with Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law, and more.

Waste audits are the process of quantifying the amount and type of waste being generated by an organization. These audits help identify current waste practices and how they can be improved. Our audit process will also help to engage your school in waste-reduction efforts, measure the efficacy of existing programs and initiatives, and identify opportunities for improvement.

NWSWD provides various brochures, posters, and other printed materials to help schools clearly label their trash, recycling, and food scraps containers and educate their students and staff. Check our resources page to view and download! We also have blue recycling bins available for purchase for $6 a bin.

We can help your school comply with Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law, which bans all food scraps from the trash. We will assist you with that transition by explaining how the law applies to your institution, providing onsite assistance and guidance, and addressing any questions you may have!
